Roof Décor: Safety Tips for the Holidays

It’s that season again. Holiday fun means caroling, shopping and spending time with friends—but these aren’t the only events that make up the season. When you’re decorating your home, consider roof décor that enhances the holiday aesthetic of your home – and is also safe for your roof.

Decorations like a blow-up Santa and his reindeer, evergreen trees and more can put a lot of weight on your roof. To avoid damaging your roof while decorating for the holiday, heed these tips:

• Leave the shingles to their mingling. Your shingles are there to play one key role. They’re there to protect your roof. Don’t hang lights from them. Even tiny holes in shingles made to secure lights can let in moisture. This moisture will seep through your shingles. Eventually, that water will damage your roof.
• Go slow. When you’re putting up or taking down decorations, do it with care. One small mishap when tugging on decorations could mean damage to the gutters, shingles, etc.
• Watch for power lines. Don’t put decorations near or in the way of power lines. In addition, be wary of overloading power circuits and shorting out your home’s power supply.
• Use the pros. If you want to go all out this year, consider getting expert help. Have a contractor evaluate the roof. They’ll assess how much weight it can realistically stand. Then, hire a holiday décor professional to go to town on the roof.
