Underlayment, flashing, shingles, trim—these are some of the most important components of your roof. Learn their primary function and tips to know when upgrading a roof.

The most important components of your roof include:

• The underlayment. When you see a home with some or all of its shingles removed, you’ll notice the roof has a black layer of paper or felt beneath them. This is the underlayment. It’s applied on top of the roof’s plywood structure, and it’s designed to seal the area to prevent elements like snow, sleet or rain from accessing it.
• The flashing. Installed over top of the underlayment but under the shingles, flashing is the component of the roof where metal pieces are laid in order to prevent moisture from penetrating through the areas where the underlayment and shingles meet up with a chimney or slope in the roof. A variety of materials are used for flashing, including galvanized alloy, stainless steel or copper.
• The shingles (or tiles). The final layer of the roof, shingles or tiles are smaller square- or rectangular-shaped barriers that are exposed to the elements. However, it’s possible to cover a roof with concrete, metal or even wood shingles, depending upon the style of the home and shape of the roof.
• The trim. The final key component of the roofing system features the trim. The trim makes a protective edge around the roof, or wherever there is a seam at the ridge or peak. In a way, the trim is what ties all the roofing parts together.
